Moira Community And The Speciality Food Fair | Northern Ireland

A few years ago, I was involved in helping organise a local charity project in my hometown of Moira, County Down. At the time, it didn’t feel like something worth documenting publicly — it was just people showing up, giving their time, and trying to do some good locally.

Recently, while doing my yearly archive of digital files and old project folders, I came across a short video we created to showcase that work. It was used to promote our involvement at the Moira Speciality Food Fair, an event that takes place every year in Moira Demesne, supported by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.

Moira Community & the Food Fair

The video highlights the work of Moira Community — a local, volunteer-led group focused on bringing people together and supporting initiatives within the village and surrounding area.

The Moira Speciality Food Fair has become a fixture in the local calendar. It’s one of those events that quietly does a lot of good: showcasing local producers, supporting small businesses, and giving people a reason to come together in a shared space.

I helped behind the scenes with organisation, digital work, and promotion — using the same skills I apply professionally through Invisible Building , but purely in service of the local community.

Stepping Back — and Letting Things Continue

I’ve stepped aside from active involvement for some time now, but the project itself continues — which is exactly how it should be. Community work isn’t about any one person; it’s about momentum and people picking things up as others step away.

Seeing the event continue year after year, and knowing it’s still bringing people together in Moira, feels quietly rewarding.

Why Volunteering Still Matters

If there’s one thing I’d encourage people to do more of, it’s volunteering locally — whether that’s through a charity, a community group, or simply offering your skills where they’re needed.

It might just be me, but I’ve always found that when you give your time freely and without expectation, good tends to come back tenfold. Not always immediately, and not always in obvious ways — but it does.

If you’re local, you can find out more about the work still happening through Moira Community on Facebook .

Do some good. Build something local. There’s real magic in it. ❤️
